I often see parents on the internet gnashing their teeth about how kids aren’t reading, or asserting that they’ll only read graphic novels.

While this is certainly true for some kids at some times, as a K-5 school librarian who serves the same 500 kids over and over every week for years, I’ve noticed some more nuanced shifts in reading behaviors over the past 5 years.

Today, I’m sharing them with you.

Six Observations

  1. Many kids are transitioning out of picture books sooner, and many are going straight from picture books to graphics (bypassing short chapters).
