Each school year, I read aloud to kids over 1,000 times.

Literally.

(Yes, I counted. 26 classes per week x 40 weeks = 1,040. Plus, all the books I read aloud to my own kids. Plus, that time I covered for a first-grade teacher. Plus… You get the idea.)

At the end of the year, I love to look back at everything we read and note the true standouts. The ones that, when looking back, give me that zip: yes, reading THAT book with kids — that’s why I love my job.

Of the many fantastic read-aloud experiences we had this year, here are my 10 very favorites — a glorious mix of backlist and new books — with a one-liner for each:
