Happy fall, readers!
For this week’s inbox treat, I’m sending you something you can print and use right this minute in your library or your life.
I’ve long lusted after the shelf talkers they use at Powell’s Books in Portland, OR. They are simple but visually compelling and leave flexible open space for the reviewer to do what they will, whether writing a blurb, drawing a picture, or something else. I especially love how the colored shape adds an eye-catching pop of color and flows around the edge of the shelf.
Here are some shots of these glorious shelf talkers in action from my summer visit to Powell’s:
(How cute are the hand lettering and little illustrations by the Powell’s booksellers!?)
Enter my scheme to make some to use in my own library.
I wanted to include options for my recs as librarian, as well as options for kid picks, teacher picks, and selections from other staff members.
Here’s what I came up with:
I designed them so they can be folded and used as A-board-style recommendation cards in countertop displays or hung from the shelf in a more typical way.
The file I’m sharing is something you can edit and make your own on Canva. It also includes a larger font option, which makes the category fill more of the card (and you don’t have to write as much — ha!). We’ve got options, baby.
